Blue Jays news

Here is some Blue Jays related news from the past couple of days…

-The Roy Halladay speculation continued today. Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reported that the Yankees will inquire about Doc. Not really a surprise there after AA said he wouldn’t be opposed to trading within the division, something J.P. really didn’t want to do. But, I question AA’s logic about trading within the division. He said he’s open to any trade that makes the Blue Jays better as a team. But if you trade Doc to the Yanks or Red Sox, you are effectively making a team the Jays have to play 18 times a year much better. How much can the Jays improve if they are improving the teams in their division? In baseball especially, it’s important to improve relative to the teams in your division because of the playoff format. Yes, obviously I want the highest return possible for Doc, and if that’s from the Yanks or Red Sox, so be it. But picture this: Jays in New York for a 3 game set and face Halladay, Sabathia and Burnett or in Fenway for Halladay, Beckett, Lester. Scary thought isn’t it?

-Lyle Overbay is definitely on the trading block. He is now involved in a trade rumour with the Seattle Mariners. No word yet as to who the Jays would receive in return. What I wanna know is who will play first once Overbay is gone.

-AA continued his revamping of the scouting department. I really like where he’s going with this. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Jays have hired an “unprecedented” (according to a Blue Jays exceutive) amount of scouts, 25 pro and 25 amateur. Sherman writes “The idea of new GM Alex Anthopoulos is to try to become the best drafting and trading team in the sport — essentially to know available players at all levels better than any other team to avoid expensive free agents.”

Sounds good to me.

  1. I don’t mind AA trading Roy to the Yankees. I would mind him being traded to Boston.

Roy would make the Yankees unbeatable – which means they would slaughter us AND Boston – thus evening the playing field for the Jays. IF – Roy was traded to Boston THAT would really hurt because then two AL East teams would be lots better than us.

Obviously, i want us to resing sign him or trade him to the NL.

    • Interesting way of looking at it. But wouldn’t it create just as big a roadblock to a potential championship? The Jays would seemingly have to go through the “unbeatable” Yankees in the playoffs.
