Who is Jeff Berry?

Jeff Berry, you idiot.

For those of you, like me, who don’t know Jeff Berry, he works with Greg Landry (Halladay’s agent) at CAA. Great, not important. The problem is, he realized he wasn’t important and wanted some attention. That’s the only explanation I can provide for this quote:

“One thing is certain – once Roy reports to spring training as a member of the Blue Jays, from that point forward he will not approve or even discuss any potential trade scenario,” said Berry. “This will eliminate a repeat of the distracting media frenzy of 2009 for both Roy and his teammates, and will allow Roy to focus on pitching at the exceptional level Jays fans have come to expect.”

No. Please tell me you didn’t just say that.

Sure, this eliminates Halladay-deadline-trade-media-frenzy 2010, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY it eliminates whatever leverage the Jays have in trade discussions this offseason. Now everybody knows the Jays are basically forced to trade Doc before the season and the quality of the offers is going to go down further than it already has since July 31. Why couldn’t Berry just have mentioned that privately to AA?

Maybe I’m wrong. As other Jays blogs mused, could this actually give the Jays more leverage? It essentially sets a trade deadline of February 17th (the day before pitchers and catchers report to spring training). So, anybody who wants Doc to preform his magic tricks for their team in 2010, sometimes known as pitching, know when AA’s phone goes off the hook. Let’s get serious for a minute (wait, we weren’t being serious before?), the return for Halladay would almost certainly be much worse if they waited until the trade deadline. Berry’s statement takes the less than stellar deadline deal out of the equation. That’s good isn’t it?

The way I see it, the Jays are in a go big or go home situation. Either they get the right deal for Halladay this offseason or we get two compensation picks in the 2011 draft when Halladay walks next to nothing.

I guess only time will tell. Jeff Berry better hope AA’s Blackberry has 18 new texts and 27 missed calls from New York and Boston area codes right about now.
