Spank the Yanks

The Blue Jays did just that today. They beat the Yankees 9-1 and improved their spring record to 3-1. Ya, I know spring training means jack, but there were a few positives to take from today’s affair.

The story of the day was the return of Shaun Marcum.  He was pitching for the first time since 2008, and threw two scoreless innings, allowing only one walk and adding 2 strikeouts. He did this against the likes of Jeter, Granderson, Posada and A-Rod. Nice. After Marcum got yanked, a bunch of other no names held down the fort for the Jays.

On the other side of the ball, Jose Bautista continued his success as leadoff man, going 2-for-3 with a RBI. He doubled off A.J. Burnett, who is…wait for it…a right handed pitcher. No way Jose! Hill was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI, Lind 2-for-3 with a dinger, Wells was 3-for-3 (no joke) and J.P. “I’m not a bust, I swear” Arencibia also went yard (again).

Speaking of Arencibia, I’m not really sure what his chances are to go North with the Jays in April. They’re really crowded behind the plate already with John Buck, Raul Chavez and Jose Molina. The Jays probably wouldn’t bring him up as a backup because that might hurt his development, so he’s likely going to repeat at AAA. But If he continues his hot play, it’ll be hard to keep him off the team.

Arencibia is just one of the guys who’s been mashing for the Jays so far. Pretty much the everyone has been chipping in. They’ve scored 38 runs in the first 4 games. That makes the real question: who hasn’t been hitting?  Well, basically just Travis Snider and Alex Gonzalez, but Gonzalez is kinda to be expected. If Snider keeps this charade up, AA’s threat that he won’t make the team may come true. That would really piss me off. I don’t even want to think about it.

Jays play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Detroit. Snider, make it rain.
