Jays shut out Braves

Now that the Jays bats have calmed down a little bit, the pitching has caught fire. The Jays suffocated the Braves 3-0 this afternoon. Ricky Romero started today and went 4 innings, allowing 2 hits, no runs, 4 walks, and struck out one. Dana Eveland continued his impressive spring with 3 shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out 4. Sean Henn and Ray Gonzalez held down the fort in the 8th and 9th.

At this point, I think Eveland’s done everything to earn the 5th starter job. I don’t want to hear anything more about Tallet, he should be in the bullpen. Eveland’s been lights out this spring, and acutally posted a respectable 4.34 ERA as a starter with the A’s in 2008. Tallet was decent as a starter for a while last year but really fell off. Send him back to the bullpen so he can recreate his 2008 season, where he dished out a 2.88 ERA as a reliever.

The Battle for the Bench got heated up again today. Mike McCoy, a candidate for the fourth outfielder spot, went 2-for-4. But his arch-nemisis, Jeremy Reed, one-upped him with a 2-for-3 showing, adding a RBI. They are batting .615 and .471 respectively on the spring. In terms of the backup first baseman position, my man Brian Dopirak didn’t do much to help his cause today. He went 0-for-3 with 2 K’s. Randy Ruiz subbed in for Dopirak and went 1-for-2. But he also got caught stealing (I realize you lost some weight in the offseason Randy, but let’s get serious).

J.P. “Air In Sybia” Arencibia was 0-for-1.

Travis Snider Watch

He got a hit! A double! And scored a run! Spring average: .211.

. . .

The Jays and Braves tango again tomorrow at 1 p.m. If you check in at 1 p.m. and the game’s already in the 3rd inning, you forgot something.
